Education
Father, Ivan Osipovich Petondi (an architect from Switzerland, (born 13.9.1765 Castel San Pietro, Ticino, Switzerland), born Giovanni Battista Petondi}, in the tradition of family artels, began to teach his son architecture from an early age. At 13 years of age, the training was translated On an academic basis, Thomas became a student of the Kremlin’s Expedition School of Architecture. Thomas studied for only two years and was hired as an assistant architect there on June 5, 1812. First projects
Thomas inherited after his father the place of the Oryol provincial architect. Began a long, 21 years long, Orel period of service Petondi. In February 1813 he was already an architect, but without a rank, in 1815 he received the position of clerk in the Oryol Construction Commission, in 1816 became the provincial secretary, on March 13, 1820 - the collegiate secretary. In the same year, the first large independent project began - the construction of a stone building of the main building of the Orel Theological Seminary. On April 2, 1824, Foma Ivanovich received a certificate from state councilor, Ryazan civil governor Nikolai Ivanovich Schroeder , who was formerly the governor of Orel , where "zealous service and superlative performance of his duties, as well as the testimony of perfect art" are noted in his work by the provincial architect Petondi. Under his leadership, repair and reconstruction of the governor’s and vice-governor’s houses, state-owned salt shops and barracks for prisoners was carried out, for which excellent service “from the bounty of the Monarch ... was graciously rewarded with a gold watch”. In 1826, the next increase to the rank of a titular adviser follows. At the end of 1827 the construction of the seminary building was completed. In addition to the above, a public school building was built in Orel according to the designs of Thomas Ivanovich, as well as, possibly, the Trinity Necropolis (in any case, it was he who was in charge of the work here).
Kazan Period
On June 11, 1834, Thomas I. Petondi assumed his duties as Kazan provincial architect. In the same year they built the first house here - for merchant Aleksandrov. The following year, he began with the conversion of the church to the apartment of the local priest — after the defeat of the Polish uprising in Kazan , there were many exiled Polish Poles Catholics. He also took part in the construction of the Kazan Monastery of the Mother of God and built a new bell tower on his project in the Kyzic Monastery . At the same time they carried out many private orders.
By Easter in 1836, F. I. Petondi received the rank of collegiate assessor , and in the same year began building the building of the city duma, as well as the city estates of E. A. Boratynsky and his own. The latter has not survived, its plan is kept in the archives of the Kazan provincial commission. In the summer of the same year, his mother Elizaveta Filippovna Petondi died and was buried in the cemetery of the Kizichesky Monastery . Since 1837, F.I. Petondi is the chief architect of the construction of the Kazan Rodionovsky Institute of Noble Maidens . In 1838 he was given the title of hereditary Russian nobleman. In 1841, after the construction of the Rodionovsky Institute complex was completed, Thomas Ivanovich was awarded the Order of St.. Vladimir IV degree. At the same time, the expansion of the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Kazan Kremlin began . In 1842, the foundation stone was laid for the building of the Kazan Hotel (the corner of Chernyshevsky and Musa Dzhalil streets , now (2008) its restoration is underway).
In 1843, the architect was given the rank of court counselor , he received many private orders, and carried out work to expand the Annunciation Monastery.
Unmerited allegations
In 1844, F. I. Petondi was accused of allowing technical errors in the construction of the Rodionovsky Institute. They filed a case against him, deprived him of his posts, ranks, orders and pensions, after which for 10 years he sought the truth in St. Petersburg , settling there temporarily to personally follow the process. At that time, in his Kazan manor in the 1846/1847 school year, four rooms were rented by students of the Kazan University Brothers Tolstoy, among whom was the future writer Leo Tolstoy .
Rehabilitation, recent years
In 1854, Foma Ivanovich was completely rehabilitated. Upon his return to Kazan, he continued to serve for a while in the construction commission, but already as an ordinary architect. In 1859 he sold his house to N. G. Osokin, in 1860 he retired. Foma Ivanovich died in Kazan on July 13, 1874. He was buried in the Orthodox Arsk cemetery . His wife Nadezhda Mikhailovna, nee Kuzmina, was also buried there.
