Biography

The third son and youngest child of King Tong Taufahau Tupou IV . He began his career in military affairs: in 1982 he entered the service in the Tongan naval forces , and in 1987 became a lieutenant commander . Between 1990 and 1995, he commanded the VOEA Pangai patrol boat, and also participated in peacekeeping operations on Bougainville Island ( Papua New Guinea ).

In 1998, he left military service, becoming a civil servant, while simultaneously holding the posts of Minister of Defense and Minister of Foreign Affairs from October 1998 to August 2004 . In these posts, he replaced his older brother, Siaosi Tupou . On January 3, 2000, Ahoeeitu was appointed Prime Minister of Tonga . On February 11, 2006, for an unknown reason, he left this post. This was probably caused by the unrest in the country in mid- 2005 , in which protesters advocated for a decline in the role of the royal family in Tong's leadership. His place was taken by Feleti Sevele , the first prime minister of Tonga, who was not a hereditary title holder or aristocrat.

Family

Ahoeheitu is married to the daughter of the High Leader of Vaea, Nanasipau . Three children were born in the marriage:

  • Princess Angelika Latufuipeka Tucuaho (born November 17, 1983 , Tonga ). He is the current High Commissioner in Australia since August 2012.
  • Prince Siaosi Tupoutoa Tukuaho (born September 17, 1985 , Nukualofa , Tonga ) is the heir to the throne. He married on July 12, 2012 to Hon Son Saytakal Fakafanua, daughter of the late Supreme Leader Kinikinilo Fekafanu and Princess Ofeynoy, Lady Fekafanu. They have two children:
    • Prince Taufaahau Manumataongo (born May 10, 2013 , Auckland , New Zealand );
    • Princess Halaevalu Mat'eho (born July 12, 2014 , Auckland , New Zealand );
  • Prince Ata - Unuaki Unuakiotonga (born 1988 , Nukualofa , Tonga ).

Name and titles

In Tonga, it is a tradition to give the prince a traditional title under which he becomes known to the population and which is used instead of his baptized name. Prior to his official appointment as heir to the throne, Ahoeeitu was the holder of one or all three titles at once: Lavaka from Pea, Ata from Kolovai and Atat, Ulukalala from Vava'u . These titles can be used in any order, however, Lavaka Ata Ulukala and Ulukalal Lavaka Ata are more often used.

Since his appointment as heir to the throne, Ahoeeitu has received the traditional title of Tupoutoa , which is given to all Crown Princes . Previously, its carrier was the elder brother Ahoeheitu, who was forced to renounce the title after marrying a woman from a simple family.

It is noteworthy that the official coronation ceremony of Tupou VI took place only three years after accession to the throne. Coronation was the culmination of a week of festivities that included traditional Tongan ceremonies, street performances, and festivals. In addition to the Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito , the European royal family members Hungarian Prince Georg von Habsburg and the Austrian Princess Marie-Teresa von Hohenberg took part in the celebrations [1]
