Biography
Conrad von Jungingen was born around 1355 , probably in Jungingen, Württemberg .
In January 1394, a new campaign began in Lithuania , in which many French and German knights took part, including a detachment of shooters from Burgundy . The advancing troops managed to defeat Vytautas and begin the siege of Vilna . On the eighth day of the siege, the master of Livonia, Vennemar von Bruggenoe, arrived near Vilna. After the depletion of supplies, the crusaders were forced to retreat [3] .
Under the leadership of Conrad, the Teutonic Order in 1398 defeated the pirates wintering there on the island of Gotland . He ordered the destruction of the fortifications of the "liquor dealers" in Landskron , the fortress in Slit and, presumably, the so-called "Palace of Leust". Since then, the Baltic Sea has been almost freed from pirates, and the rest (among them Klaus Stertebeker ) were forced to flee to the North Sea .
In 1393, under the leadership of Konrad, the settlement of Sensburg was founded in East Prussia , where the Order erected a wooden fortress in 1348 . In 1397, on the initiative of Conrad, construction of the Ragnit castle began [4] .
In 1398, between the Teutonic Order and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Salin Agreement was concluded, according to which Samogitia passed under the power of the Crusaders and a lasting peace was established between the parties [3] .
He died on March 30, 1407 in the castle of Marienburg , where he was buried.
The death of the great master was very unusual. The doctor prescribed Conrad as a treatment for gallstone sexual intercourse , but the chaste knight refused to comply with the prescription, which brought him to the grave [5] .
