History
The order for the construction of a submarine was given on November 21, 1936 . The boat was laid on September 15, 1938 at the shipyard "Germaniaverft" in Kiel under construction number 584, launched on June 24, 1939 . The boat was commissioned on August 12, 1939 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Kurt von Goessler.

Service history
October 31, 1939 the boat entered service combat ships. During the war, U-49 made 4 combat campaigns. Sank one ship - British transport Pensilva with a displacement of 4,258 grt .
Sunk on April 15, 1940 near Narvik , Norway , at coordinates , depth bombs from the British destroyers HMS Fearless and HMS Brazen . Of the 42 crew members, one died, the rest were saved. The frame of the submarine, lying at the bottom at a depth of 300 meters, was discovered on March 3, 1993 by the Norwegian vessel Skolpen.
Attacks to the boat
- On November 13, 1939, the boat was attacked by a British plane, evaded an attack by immersion to a depth of 160 meters, and received some damage.
- On November 16, 1939, two British destroyers, HMS Echo and HMS Wanderer, attacked the boat, which, descending from the attack, plunged 170 meters.
