Description

Found in tropical America ( Brazil , Florida ), form a dense tropical undergrowth. They are succulent perennial herbs with large arrow-shaped leaves, reminiscent of a card suit of hearts in shape. Because of the shape of the leaves, caladiums were colloquially called elephant ears, the heart of Christ, angel wings. In the original range, leaf blades of caladium reach 30-50 centimeters in width. Flowers - same-sex, without perianth, collected in cobs like arum. At the base of the panicle, the flowers are pistillate, then stamen flowers, above them is the sterile part of the cob. The ear itself is surrounded by a white veil. The fruit is a panicle with berries . One of the species - edible caladium (Caladium esculentum), bred in South America for the rhizomes rich in starch . Some externally decorative species (C. bicolor, C. marmoratum, C. picturatum, etc.) were domesticated, brought to the Russian Federation and the CIS , and under conditions of artificial selection gave rise to many garden , greenhouse and indoor varieties, which vary in shape and color leaves (red, pink, purple, white, mixed). Caladiums are widely used in the design of personal plots and flower beds in the southern United States. Plants are hygrophilous and thermophilic. For the winter they dig and store at a temperature of + 13 + 16 ° C. Prefer diffused light and partial shade. The juice of all parts of the plant is toxic and can cause allergies.
