He played for the Romanian national team for 15 years, having played 115 matches (the third result in the history of the Romanian national team) and scoring 16 goals. One of the best football players in the history of Romanian football.

Popescu performed in leading clubs, wore the Barcelona captain's armband.
After his career, he became a football agent and opened a school for young football players.
Popescu is the brother of the wife of another famous Romanian football player, Gheorghe Hadji .
In March 2014, Popescu was sentenced to three years, one month, and 10 days in prison for tax evasion and money laundering [2] .
The ex-player of the Romanian national team spent one year and eight months in prison, only in November 2015 he was released on parole [3] .
