Geographical position

Located in the south of the district, on the left bank of the river Main . The distance to the nearest settlement - Markovo village is 60 km, to the district center - 311 km.

Toponym

The village is named after a hill of the same name - with a chuk. varan ( koryak. vaevvi ) - β€œthe yaranga poles”.

In antiquity, this hill battle took place between the Chukchi and Koryak. The Chukchi, who were at the top, poured water over the mountain, making it impregnable, but the Koryaks tried to climb up. Then the Chukchi loaded the sledges with stones and laid them across the pole from the yarang and lowered them down. The sleds shot down a climbing opponent [3] .

Population

As of April 1, 2013, 502 people lived in Vahegah, including the indigenous - 425 people [4] .

History

The village was founded in 1951. 15 Lamut families from the Old Vayeg were resettled here because the village was flooded with spring floods. Part of the immigrants were residents of the village of Berezovo . Here the state farm "Path to Communism" was organized. In 1954, a district hospital was built in Vahegah, which received a new building in 2009 [14] .

Economy and social infrastructure

The main branch of the economy is reindeer herding . Here is based the municipal enterprise of agricultural producers "Vayezky".

The village has a high school, kindergarten, post office, communications center, shop, club.

The current [15] Orthodox Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God.

Village streets [16] : Forest, River, Northern, Central, School.

Passenger communication with the Anadyr is carried out by a Mi-8 helicopter with a frequency of 1–4 times per month [17] . Since the end of 2014, after the reconstruction of the runway, it became possible to receive the DHC-6 sides [18] . Flights are performed 1-4 times per month. [nineteen]

Culture

The village is famous for national holidays - β€œKilvey”, β€œThanksgiving Ritual”, β€œYoung Deer” and reindeer-sledding races.

Here, the clubs β€œOlenevod” and β€œChumrabotnitsa” have been created, in which the basics of reindeer breeding, the collection of folklore material, and the preparation of life in the tundra are studied with children. The club employs the folk team β€œTopolinka”, the vocal-instrumental ensemble and the club of labor veterans β€œEtti” (β€œThe Greeting”).

Monuments

In the vicinity of the village is the grave of the first chief of the Anadyr district, the doctor LF Grinevetsky , on which a granite monument surrounded by a cast-iron fence was installed with funds raised by the staff of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society. On the monument there is an inscription: β€œTo the laborer for the benefit of science, 1894.”
