According to legend, the icon was painted in the XVII century after a vision by an unknown icon painter of the Mother of God . This icon painter during the split of the Russian church could not understand the meaning of Nikon's reform for himself and fell into insanity. Then he began fervently praying to the Most Holy Theotokos for admonition. After Her vision, he received a promise of healing if he painted the icon of the Virgin in the form in which She appeared to him. The icon painter fulfilled his vow and named the written image “Adding the mind to the Most Holy Theotokos” [2] . The original was stored in the Transfiguration Cathedral of the city of Rybinsk .
The prototype of this icon is a statue of the Virgin, located in the House of the Virgin in the Italian city of Loreto . This connection was established by Andrei Alexandrovich Titov at the beginning of the 20th century. In Russia, the legend of Our Lady of Loretta has been known since the 16th century, and the engraving depicting the Loreto shrine [1] served as the direct iconographic source of the icon “Add Mind”.
On the icon, the Mother of God and Christ are depicted in a swaddled felon . On the heads of Mary and the baby are royal crowns. Christ has a power in his left hand. At the top of the icon is an arch and lamps. Angels are painted on both sides, holding lighted candles in their hands. Under the feet of the Mother of God and above her head are cherubim with spread wings.
The text is often written in the lower part of the icon: “ The image of the Most Holy Theotokos, by adding to life, judges the living and the dead from mortal killing, protects from corrupting winds, chills, shaking, from finding poisonous animals, from enemies and mosses, and mosquitoes .” [3]
In the Intercession Church of the city of Tutaev, the icon “Adding the Mind”, revered by the miraculous, is kept. They turn to her for help in school, getting rid of mental illness, enlightenment of thoughts, etc. Traditionally, the icon was brought to the regional center of Yaroslavl before the Day of Knowledge .
In Moscow, the image of the Mother of God “Adding the Mind” is in the temple in honor of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God in Alekseevsky , on Church Hill near the VDNKh metro station.
