East Africa is a geographical term encompassing the countries of Africa east of the Nile with the exception of Egypt . About 200 nationalities live in East Africa and four language groups are found. Due to the large cultural and social differences in East Africa, there is a significant conflict potential, more than once expressed in past and current wars, including civil wars.
The borders of many states were set arbitrarily by the former colonial powers, not taking into account the natural ethnic and cultural borders. This fact significantly complicates the development of the region.
A number of countries in East Africa - Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda - formed a customs union - the East African Community .
East Africa is regarded by most anthropologists as the cradle of humanity .
