Biography
James Coburn is the son of mechanic James Harrison Coburn Sr. and Maylet Coburn (nee Johnson). His maternal grandfather and mother were from Sweden . Coburn grew up in Compton, California .
As an actor, he made his debut on the stage of the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego . After several episodic roles in television series, he appeared in a big movie - in the Western "The Lone Horseman " (1959). In the same year, he married for the first time - Beverly Kelly, the couple had two children: James Harrison Coburn IV (born 1961) and Lisa (born 1967).
The Western “The Magnificent Seven ” (1960) and the action movie about the Second World War “The Great Escape ” (1963) gained great fame. In both films directed by director John Sturges , Coburn played with his friends Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson , and in The Magnificent Seven, he also played with Robert Vaughn , whom he knew from college. In 1965, he starred in Sam Pekinp 's Western Major Dundee , and later he will star in two more films by this director.
In the films Our Man Flint (1966) and Flint's Double (1967), Coburn played a secret agent, spoofing the role of Sean Connery in the James Bond movie series . In the late sixties, he became interested in oriental martial arts (he studied under Bruce Lee ) and Buddhism , so he did not act very much.
In 1971, Coburn played the Irish revolutionary in the film Sergio Leone, " For a Fistful of Dynamite ." In this western about the Mexican Revolution , Rod Steiger was his partner.
In the 1970s, two more films by Sam Pekinpa with the participation of Coburn were released: Western “ Pat Garrett and Billy Kid ” (1973) and the drama about the Second World War “ Iron Cross ” (1977). Coburn and Pekingpa remained friends until the death of the director in 1984. In 1979, the actor divorced his first wife.
Due to the fact that Coburn fell ill with rheumatoid arthritis , he did not often appear on the screen in the 1980s, during which time he recorded songs with the British singer Linsi de Paul and sometimes appeared in television series. In the 1990s, he returned to active film work, playing westerns and action films again, and in 1993 he married a second time - to actress Paul O'Hara. For his role in the 1997 drama Sorrow , Coburn won the Academy Award for the first time (he had never been nominated for an Oscar before).
James Coburn passed away on November 18, 2002 at the age of 74 from myocardial infarction .
