Mangnall became the first coach with whom United won trophies. He began to lead the club in 1903 . In the first two seasons, under his leadership, the club could not enter the First Division: this was possible only at the end of the 1905/06 season. In the first season, which United held in the First Division, the club finished in the middle of the table. The next season, the team did not win trophies, but in the championship finished in 5th place. In the 1910/11 season, United again celebrated their championship, ahead of Aston Villa by 1 point. After that, the club could not win the championship for more than 40 years. After spending another season at the club, Mangnall left United in 1912 , leading another local team - Manchester City .
