Kavos, Caesar Albertovich

Caesar Albertovich Kavos (1824-1883) - academician of architecture of the Imperial Academy of Arts and author of many buildings in St. Petersburg and in the suburbs, including the Post Office building, Prince P.G. Oldenburg Children's Hospital (now - K. Children's City Hospital No. 19 A. Rauchfus ) and other buildings, the chairman of the construction commission and the author of the project of lanterns on the bridge of Emperor Alexander II (now Liteiny Bridge ), the founder of the St. Petersburg Society of Architects .

Biography

The oldest son of the builder of the Mariinsky Theater , Albert Katarinovich Kavos [1] from his first marriage with Carobio Cavos . In 1835 he entered the Main German School of St. Petra along with his younger brother Konstantin , later a famous diplomat, secret adviser and official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1840, Kavos entered the Imperial Academy of Arts as a free listener; five years later, on November 13, 1845, he graduated with the award of the title of “non-class architect”.

Subsequently, Caesar Kavos served for many years with his father: in the Post Office (1847-1868) [2] , the Page Corps (1849-1881), the Society for the Education of Noble Maidens (1851-1870). For the buildings constructed under his own projects during the nine-year service at the Page Corps and at the Post Office, Kavos was elevated to the rank of academician of architecture in 1857 without executing a special program.

C. A. Kavos was an architect at the office of the St. Petersburg Council of orphanages. In addition to his official duties, he built a paper spinning factory for the Golenishchev’s heirs in St. Petersburg and, by competition (1865–1870), the building of the Prince P. G. Oldenburgsky Children's Hospital near the Greek Church using the latest scientific achievements and convenience requirements and the elegance of the premises [3] . His articles were published in Builder Week; In addition, Kavos was the vowel of the St. Petersburg City Council and the director of various joint-stock companies.

Caesar Albertovich was one of the founders of the St. Petersburg River Yacht Club [4] .

In the preface to the Russian edition of Bob Bond’s book, The Yachtsman’s Handbook (L .: Shipbuilding, 1989. - 336 pp.) K. G. Boykov and D. A. Kurbatov write (p. 8):

“In the spring of 1858, St. Petersburg Ts. A. Kavos purchased the 17-foot Zabava sailboat and regularly sailed the Neva with his friends. On the banks of the Black River, yachtsmen rented a summer house and a parking place and organized a club called "Jack of all trades." A year later, it was renamed the Nevsky Yacht Club, the flag was approved, and the charter of the club was developed, which provided for membership regardless of class. ”

Caesar Albertovich Kavos died in St. Petersburg on July 14, 1883 and was buried next to his father at the Volkovsky Lutheran cemetery .
