Biography

Ivan Fedoseevich Count Botsis was born in Dalmatia , served in the Venetian fleet.

Creating a new galley service, Peter the Great sent young nobles to Venice, France and Spain, and to manage the newly created fleet, he instructed the Russian ambassador in Constantinople , Count Peter Tolstoy, to find a capable and experienced galley flagship who wanted to enter the Russian service. Such a hunter was, among others, Count Botsis. In 1702, reporting on his admission, Tolstoy wrote that Botsis “was of the Greek breed, served in the Venetian armada, and the man was glorious in the art of navigation, and during the war he repaired many laudable things and was now the commissar of the whole Archipelago .” In a report submitted to the embassy, Botsis testified that he had served in Venice for 17 years, “ commanding galleys and ships and disobeying anyone but the captain-general and the Senate, and for his glorious service he was made consul on all Archipelago islands: that being a native of Turkey and well-fed by the Venetian, he acquired great knowledge in galley and shipbuilding with 17 years of service, and that, leaving his wife, honor, estates, servants and his glory, he came to serve His Imperial Majesty. He did not conclude any conditions and in everything relies on the sovereign’s will ” [2] .

In 1704 he was appointed head of the galley fleet, which was then arranged in St. Petersburg and Kronstadt . In 1705, he assisted Bruce (the chief commandant of St. Petersburg ) to drive the Swedish general Maidel away from the then built St. Petersburg .

On May 6, 1708, Count Botsis, with a detachment of nine scampaways and nine brigantines, unexpectedly attacked the Finnish coast, landed an assault of 500 people, ravaged the city of Borg , collected indemnities from the surrounding villages, destroyed the enemy detachment and burned 15 merchant ships. In August of that year he again defended St. Petersburg from the Swedish general Lübecker.

In 1710, he participated in an ice campaign to Vyborg , leading a galley detachment, then participated in the siege of Vyborg . In August 1712, under the command of Apraksin , on the way to the Finnish town of Vogelasco , captured eight Swedish transport ships.

In 1713, he commanded the rearguard of the fleet, in which Peter led the vanguard and which brought the land forces of Lieutenant General Prince Golitsyn to Finland. Peter the Great was in correspondence with Count Botsis, whom he valued for his knowledge and personal virtues; after the death of Botsis, the king took his sword as a keepsake and provided his family with pensions. During the marriage of Catherine with Peter Botsis was the planted father of the king along with Vice Admiral Kruys .

Ivan Fedoseevich Count Botsis died on May 18, 1714 (according to the RBSP, he died on May 8 [2] ).
