Biography

He was the son of Tsarevich Archil (died October 6, 1775), brother of the Imereti king Solomon I the Great , and Princess Helena (1753-1786), daughter of the king of Kartli-Kakheti kingdom Irakli II . At birth he received the name David. In 1784, Solomon I, after the death of his son Alexander, who was left without male heirs, died, having previously appointed David as his heir. However, David 's cousin, David II , took the throne, unleashing a civil war. Heraclius II intervened on the side of the grandson. The army expelled by him defeated the army of David II on June 10, 1789 at the battle of Mathoji. David, the son of Archil, became king of Imereti under the name of Solomon II. However, David II continued the struggle for the throne until he suffered a final defeat in 1792.

Solomon II ruled Imereti, relying on the support of Heraclius II and continuing the policy of Solomon I to reduce the power of the local nobility. In 1795, with a small army, he joined the army of Heraclius in the battle with Iran at Krzanisi.

After the death of Heraclius in 1798 and the inclusion of Kartli and Kakheti in the Russian Empire in 1801, the situation in Imereti was significantly complicated. The vassal of Imereti, Prince of Mingrelia , came under the Russian protectorate. Solomon tried to enlist the support of Turkey and Iran against Russia, but the commander-in-chief of the Russian troops in Georgia, General Pavel Tsitsianov , on April 20, 1804 sent troops into Imereti and forced Solomon II to sign an agreement on the Russian protectorate over Imereti. The agreement ( Elaznaur Convention ) was signed on April 25, 1804.

On July 4, Alexander I confirmed the convention. However, Solomon’s relationship with Russia continued to deteriorate. In 1809, he supported the uprising in Eastern Georgia, launched by his relatives, for which he was taken into custody and imprisoned in Tiflis .

On May 11, 1810, through Akhaltsikhe, he fled to Turkey . Meanwhile, on February 20, 1810, the Russian administration removed Solomon from power and brought in troops to take control of the Imeretian kingdom. Solomon responded by returning to Imereti and rebelling against Russia, trying to enlist the support of Turkey, Iran and Napoleonic France. After the defeat of the uprising in September 1810, he fled to Trebizond , where he died on February 7, 1815 [1] . Solomon was buried in the cathedral of St. Gregory of Nyssa in Trebizond.

In 1990, the body of the last Georgian king was transferred to the Gelati Monastery [2] . The canonization took place on June 27, 2005 [3] .
