Biography
He lived in Galicia, which at that time was part of Austria-Hungary. Member of the Polish Peasant Party ( Polish. Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe, PSL ) since 1895, one of the founders and leaders of the Piast Party (1913-1931). Member of the Galician Sejm in 1908-1914, deputy of the Reichsrat in Vienna in 1911-1918. Vitos was also the head of the Polish Liquidation Commission ( Polish. Polska Komisja Likwidacyjna ) in 1918, the leader of the Polish Peasant Party "Piast" ( Polish. Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe "Piast" ) and the deputy of the Sejm (1919-1930).
Three times he served as Prime Minister of Poland : in 1920-1921, 1923 and 1926. The last government of Vitos was overthrown during the May coup of U. Pilsudski .
Vitos was one of the leaders of the opposition to the “ reorganization regime ” and the head of the “ Centrolew ” in 1929-1930. He was also one of the founders of the Peasant Party ( Polish: Stronnictwo Ludowe, SL ). Shortly afterwards, he was imprisoned for a short time, after which he went into exile in Czechoslovakia in 1933. He returned to Poland in 1939. During the years of occupation was under the supervision of the Gestapo .
Already being sick, in 1945 he became one of the vice-chairmen of the Regional Council of the People’s ( Polish. Krajowa Rada Narodowa, KRN ).
