There is no reliable information about Petritsi’s life, with the exception of indirect indications in his writings and few details, reported in Georgian sources of the XVIII century. Apparently, he came from a noble family of Samtskhe region, studied philosophy in Constantinople in the circles of John Ital and Mikhail Psell . After the anathema imposed on Italy, Petritsi is supposed to have fled to the Georgian monastery Petritsoni (now the Bachkovo Monastery ) located in what is now Bulgaria . At the end of his life, due to a quarrel with the local clergy, he returned to his homeland, where he acquired the patronage of Tsar David the Builder and left a mark on the activities of the Gelati Academy - the center of Neoplatonic philosophy in Georgia.
The philosophical ideas of Ioane Petrici were formed under the influence of Proclus the Diadochus, whose ideas he tried to synthesize with a Christian worldview; some scholars have noted pantheism in his views. He owns commentary translations into the Georgian language of the works of not only Proclus, but also other Neoplatonists, as well as Aristotle , Josephus Flavius , parts of the Bible , hagiographic works, etc. Among his original works, the most important are the comments on Proclus, although he also turned to poetry and hymnography . Petritsi had a significant influence on the further development of Georgian philosophy and literature, in particular, on the spiritual development of Shota Rustaveli .
