Biography

Born in the capital of Uruguay Montevideo in 1940. Among his ancestors were the British, Spaniards, Italians, Germans.

At age 13, he began writing political commentaries for a local newspaper. Later he worked as an editor of various newspapers and magazines (including the magazine Christianity and Revolution ), editor-in-chief of the newspaper of the University of Montevideo and the weekly journal Marcha, and also director of the daily Época (Epoch).

After the military coup, he fled the country, from 1973 to 1976 he lived in exile in Argentina , where he organized and headed the magazine Crisis . However, then a right-wing dictatorship was established there, and Galeano again became a political emigrant. Until 1984, he lived in Spain, after which he returned to his homeland.

The author of dozens of books translated into 20 languages ​​of the world, many essays.

In the elections in Uruguay, he supported the left wide front . On January 26, 2006 , together with Gabriel García Márquez , Frey Betto , Pablo Milanes , Ernesto Sabato and other famous cultural figures, Galeano demanded the independence of Puerto Rico .

April 13, 2015 he died in Montevideo from lung cancer [1] .
