Ivan Alexandrovich Javakhishvili , in pre-revolutionary sources - Prince Ivan Alexandrovich Javakhov [2] ( Georgian ივანე ალექსანდრეს ძე ჯავახიშვილი ; April 11 [23], 1876 , Tiflis - November 18, 1940 , Tbilisi ) - Georgian historian , academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences ( 1939 ), one of the founders of Tbilisi University , which now bears his name.

Biography

Born in the aristocratic princely family of Javakhishvili (in the pre-revolutionary writing of Javakhov) [2] .

He graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Languages ​​at St. Petersburg University (1899), in 1901-1902 he trained at the University of Berlin , since 1902 he has been a privat-docent at the Department of Armenian-Georgian Philology.

In 1908 he organized a student at the St. Petersburg University “Georgian Scientific Circle”, the accumulated material on history, philology, sociology was published in the form of a collection of scientific papers (1915, in Georgian).

Together with his teacher N. Ya. Marr Javakhishvili participated in a business trip to Sinai , where he studied ancient Georgian manuscripts. In 1905 he wrote the work “Political and Social Movement in Georgia in the 19th Century.”, And in 1908 began publishing his main work, “The History of the Georgian People” (the last, 4th volume was published posthumously in 1949), which had a huge impact on Georgian historical science. At the same time as Istoriya, I worked on a large number of books on auxiliary disciplines and source studies : “Tasks, Sources, and Methods of History Before and Now,” Vols. 1–4, 1916–1926; "Ancient Georgian historical literature", 1916; "Georgian numismatics and metrology", 1925; “Georgian Paleography”, 1926; “Georgian diplomacy”, 1926.

In 1917-1918 he became one of the main figures in the struggle for the founding of the University of Tbilisi , in March 1917 at his Petrograd apartment gathered a meeting on the development of a plan of concrete action. The meeting was attended by I. A. Kipshidze , A. G. Shanidze , M. G. Kaukhchishvili , Sh. I. Nutsubidze , E. Chidzhavadze. Together with I. A. Kipshidze and A. G. Shanidze he traveled to Georgia to carry out work on the spot. The author of the Regulation on the Georgian University. During the election, the university leadership was nominated as rector, but recused himself. He was elected dean of the philosophical (at that time - the only) faculty.

In 1919 he replaced (was elected) Peter Melikishvili as rector of TSU and remained in that position until 1926 , when he was dismissed as a non-Marxist during the “purges” that followed the Georgian unrest in August 1924 on March 23, 1936, at the Scientific The then rector of the university, Carlo Oragvelidze, made a report on the history council of Tbilisi State University, the main purpose of which was to refute the merits of Javakhishvili as the founder of the university. Javakhishvili was accused of “not wanting or not able to interpret the history of the Georgian nation in accordance with the principles of historical materialism” and was suspended from teaching at the university [4] .

He was chairman of the Georgian Historical and Ethnographic Society (until 1925). Then he worked on the works: “History of Georgian Law” (vols. 1–2, 1928–1929), “Economic History of Georgia” (vols. 1–2, 1930–1934), “Basic Issues in the History of Georgian Music” (1938). From 1937 until the end of his life - Director of the Museum. Shota Rustaveli and the head of the Mtskheta archaeological expedition.

Suddenly died while giving a lecture.

He was buried in the university park [5] .

In addition to TSU, the name Javakhishvili was also assigned to the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia and Tbilisi Street [6] [7] .

Rewards

Posthumously awarded the Stalin Prize (1947). Cavalier of the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1938).
