Esperanto Club

Esperanto Club ( tracing paper from Esperanto Esperanto-klubo ; the phrase Esperanto Club is also used) is a club in which Esperanto speakers are found. Since the end of the 19th century, when the Esperanto movement appeared and began to actively develop, local Esperanto clubs were, in a sense, the basis of the Esperanto movement (however, this situation began to change with the widespread use of the Internet and the emergence of the opportunity to communicate in Esperanto over the Web).

Esperanto clubs differ in a number of ways:

  • the presence of a permanent premises;
  • regularity and variety of meetings;
  • consistency of membership (and availability of membership fees);
  • focus on a certain level of Esperanto;
  • the presence of additional goals, except for those related to the language of Esperanto (for example, the Esperanto club of teachers and students, the Esperanto club of doctors, the Esperanto club at the house of scientists , etc.);
  • attitude to the nationwide organization of Esperantists ( Russian Union of Esperantists in Russia );
  • the regularity of Esperanto courses.

In addition to activities directly related to Esperanto (language courses, long-distance and international meetings, lectures in the language, etc.), Esperanto clubs often hold events in support of multilingualism (primarily language festivals ) or even participate in public initiatives that are not related with the language situation (environmental and other similar actions).
