The Eurasian Plate is a lithospheric plate covering most of the Eurasian continent. The Hindustan , the Arabian Peninsula, and part of northeastern Eurasia east of the Verkhoyansk Range are not included in the Eurasian Plate. The western part of the Eurasian Plate extends to the Mid-Atlantic Range and captures part of Iceland . In the north of the Eurasian plate, a huge shelf is located, passing through the passive continental margin into the basin of the Arctic Ocean, and bounded by the Haeckel Ridge. In the south of the Eurasian Plate there is a huge collision zone : a belt of mountains formed as a result of the closure of the Tethys Ocean and its collision with the Hindustan Plate .
Geological structure
The Eurasian Plate occupies a huge area - 67.8 million km², it is the third largest plate and it contains the most continental crust. It has a very long history of development and contains many terranes of different ages.
