Writing History
In the author's preface, Troshev writes that the writing of his memoirs was prompted by an abundance of publications in which, according to the general, objective information about the Chechen war is distorted. speculation, and even with a frank lie about the events that I know for sure. " In addition, he considers it necessary to express his attitude to a number of well-known politicians, military leaders and bandits: “I know who is who, what lies behind the words and actions of every person involved. However, the image that the press created for them or for themselves, often does not correspond to reality ” [2] .
Contents
The book consists of ten chapters, author's introduction and epilogue. The author expresses his gratitude to those who helped him in his work: Colonel V. Frolov (Operations Officer of the Headquarters of the North Caucasus Military District ), Lieutenant Colonel Sergey Artyomov (Head of Analytical Department of the Military Herald of the South of Russia) and other employees of the newspaper. Military journalists Colonel Gennady Alekhin and Sergey Tyutyunnik, according to Troshev, “actually became co-authors of this book” [2] .
Start of War
In the first chapter, Troshev recalls the beginning of the Chechen war: preparation, advance of troops to Chechnya, battles in Grozny .
Troshev negatively assesses the role of human rights activist Sergei Kovalev in the Chechen war, saying that he “openly called on our soldiers to surrender under his powerful guarantees of liberation.” However, after being taken prisoner, as Troshev notes, referring to “the words of Captain Sergei N., who had been languishing for eight months in the Shali pit”, the soldiers were subjected to cruel torture by militants: “About beatings, sadistic tortures, public executions and other“ charms ”of Chechen captivity you can talk for a long time - you won’t be surprised by this. But here the cutting off of heads , the removal of skin and scalps from living soldiers, the crucified bodies in the windows of houses — this was the first time federal forces had to face in Grozny. ” [2]
Ambiguous assessments Troshev gives the Minister of Defense Pavel Grachev . On the one hand, according to Troshev, in the 1990s he “did not allow the army to collapse under the guise of military reform, as the young reformers demanded,” “thanks largely to Grachev, the army did not crumble to dust.” On the other hand, as Troshev writes, Grachev “never thoroughly delved into our tactical plans,” “we were waiting for some non-standard solutions, original approaches” [2] .
Invasion of Dagestan
Troshev cites excerpts from his diary, where he describes the situation on the eve of the invasion of militants in Dagestan in 1999.
