Developed in 1968 by the French company Aérospatiale (now Eurocopter France ) in accordance with the technical requirements of the Indian Air Force .
The prototype first flew March 17, 1969. By 1996, France had produced about 1,450 Lama helicopters, which were delivered to 31 countries around the world. Helicopters are built under license in India (produced more than 330 units), Romania (more than 200) and Brazil .
On June 21, 1972, a height record was set on this helicopter for all categories of helicopters (pilot Jean Boulet (fr. Jean Boulet) ): it climbed 12,442 meters . This officially confirmed record in the history of helicopter construction remains unbroken to this day.
When setting this record, due to the low temperature (−63 ° C) at altitude, the engine stalled and no longer started. Using autorotation , the pilot was able to safely land the helicopter on the ground. This is the longest landing using autorotation in history.
