History

Factory administrative building

1920-1991

State Aviation Plant No. 12 (GAZ-12) was established on September 9, 1920 on the basis of small repair shops by decision of the Council of the Military Industry No. 15178 [2] . The first director of the plant and actually its organizer was Professor V.F. Bobrov .

In the early years, the main activities of the plant were the repair of foreign-made aircraft and the production of spare parts for them [2] .

In 1923, a design bureau was established at the plant, headed by K. A. Kalinin [2] .

In 1925, the plant mastered the production of the first aircraft of the original design, which was the 4-seater passenger plane K-1 . In addition, the plant produced gliders and gliders, and in 1931 mastered the production of gyroplanes [2] .

In 1932 - 1934, a six-seater high-speed passenger aircraft KhAI-1 (the release of which was mastered in 1934) was developed at the plant [2] .

After 1937, the plant produced OKO-1 , OKO-2 and OKO-6 aircraft designed by V. K. Tairov [2] .

After the outbreak of World War II , on June 25, 1941, the plant (located on Garmatnaya St.) became the target of the German bombardment, later, in connection with the approach of the front line to the city, the factory equipment was exported to the east [2] .

After the liberation of Kiev on November 6, 1943, the plant was restored and performed repairs of Po-2 aircraft and assembly of the Yak-3 and Yak-9 .

In 1945, the plant was entrusted with the production of Bratukhin design helicopters, but this decision was not implemented in connection with the start of production of the Mi-1 in 1946 (the production of which amounted to only 5 pieces).

On August 23, 1948, the plant began the development of serial production of the An-2 aircraft [2] , which received an order from the Ministry of Aviation Industry for the production of 50 units in 1949 (2 of them in the first half). OKB-153 employees encountered difficulties in relations with the plant management; from Antonov’s letter to the Minister of Aviation Industry: “The main reason for the plant’s non-fulfillment of the plan is the extremely low level of production organization. Participating in the work of the plant, for a long time I watched the activities of the factory director M. G. Mironov and still insist on replacing it. In 1950, Pyotr Shelest was appointed director of the plant, which contributed to the start of mass production of the An-2. A total of 3320 such machines were manufactured at the plant.

In 1954 - 1956, the plant manufactured a prototype of the An-8 military transport aircraft [2] .

In 1959 - 1978, the An-24 passenger aircraft was put into serial production at the plant [2] . In total, the plant manufactured 1028 of these aircraft of various modifications.

In 1969 - 1985, the plant produced 1402 An-26 aircraft.

In 1974, the plant became part of the Kiev Aviation Production Association [2] .

In 1979 - 2003, the plant manufactured 18 An-124 Ruslan aircraft.

Since 1979, the plant has been manufacturing the An-32 aircraft in various versions.

In the late 1980s, the plant was involved in the production of the An-70 military transport aircraft.

After 1991

In 1994, the plant began the development of the Kiev trolleybus production. Trolleybus production continued until 2004.

In August 1997, the plant was included in the list of enterprises of strategic importance for the economy and security of Ukraine [3] [4] [5] .

Since 2004, AVIANT plant has been included in the implementation of the An-148 aircraft production program; since 2006, this program has become fundamental to the plant. On August 10, 2007, the plant received a certificate of approval for the production of An-148 and began its mass production (a total of 33 aircraft were produced).

On March 14, 2007 , the State Aviation Construction Concern Aviation of Ukraine was formed, which included the AVIANT plant [6] .

The economic crisis that began in 2008 and the entry of Ukraine into the WTO complicated the situation of the plant. On October 30, 2008, the AVIANT plant became part of the Antonov State Enterprise [7] . To ensure financing of the plant’s investment projects and to ensure the implementation of work on import contracts, on April 22, 2009, the plant was allocated UAH 90 million from the Stabilization Fund of Ukraine [8] , and on July 17, 2009, the Ukrainian government allowed the plant to issue bonds in the amount of UAH 858 million [9] . The merger process was finally completed in December 2009, in 2010 the company's debts were paid off [10] .

On June 9, 2010, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted Resolution No. 405, according to which the plant was included in the list of Ukrainian aviation industry enterprises receiving state support [11] .

In 2011, the plant began mass production of the An-158 aircraft.

Already in 2016, Antonov did not produce a single aircraft, the reason being the breakdown of cooperation with Russia by the Ukrainian side and the cessation of the purchase of Russian components. [12]

The lack of experience in creating heavy-duty aircraft, and the need for such, prompted the PRC to conclude a contract with Design Bureau Antonov and Motor Sich . In Shaanxi province, production workshops and housing for employees of the Ukrainian company are being built, where they will live with their families [13] . The purchase of technologies will allow the PLA Air Force to completely get rid of its dependence on the purchase of foreign aircraft, such as when creating the KJ-2000 AWACS aircraft.
