Biography
Victor Ortiz was born January 31, 1987 in Garden City , Kansas , in a family of Mexican immigrants . Victor was the second child in a three-child family. When Ortiz was 7 years old, his mother left the family. Shortly afterwards, Victor began boxing. His father was an alcoholic and often beat his children [3] . 5 years after the mother left, the father left the family. When this happened Ortiz was 12 years old [4] . He had to work on Kansas corn plantations to earn a living. At age 13, Victor fell under the guardianship of the educational system of Kansas and was separated from his brother and sister [5] .
In his youth, Ortiz traded marijuana and ecstasy . At the same time, he continued to play sports stubbornly and managed to win the Golden Gloves tournament in amateur boxing. After this victory, his photograph was published in a newspaper that was distributed throughout the state. This inspired Ortiz to engage in crime and work harder to box. [6]
During training at the Red Shield Salvation Army Center, Ortiz was noticed by a heavyweight known in the 70s - Ron Lyle . At the beginning of his career, Ortiz trained at Garden City Boxing Club under the supervision of five coaches: Ignacio Avigli, Manuel Rios, Antonio Orozco, Juan Aldana and Alfred Ritz [7] .
In 2002, his older sister Carmen became an adult and decided to move to Denver , she took custody of Victor and took him with her [5] . In 2003, Ortiz participated in the Youth Olympic Boxing Tournament. He won five fights and became the champion in the light weight category [7] .
Another former boxer drew attention to Ortiz - Roberto Cortes [7] [8] . He invited Victor to train under his leadership in the famous boxing club - “La Colonia”, which is located in Oxnard , California . Ortiz agreed and moved from Colorado , later Garcia became Victor's official guardian. At 17, Ortiz visited the US Olympic boxing team, but was eliminated in the final stage (the competition was won by Vicente Escobedo ) [7] .
First welterweight division
In 2004, at the age of 17, Ortiz became a professional boxer. At the age of 18, when Victor became an adult, he took custody of his younger brother Temo [7] [9] .
After becoming professional, Ortiz easily won 7 of his first fights. On June 3, 2005, he boxed against Corey Elacron, a little-known boxer from Denver . Already in the first round, Elacron was twice on the floor of the ring. However, the blow after which Ortiz’s opponent knocked down a second time was after the judge’s command to stop. Elacron could not continue the fight, Ortiz was disqualified and lost the fight. Elacron was booed by the public [10] . Then followed a series of 9 consecutive wins. On January 19, 2007, Ortiz boxed with Marvin Cordova , a draw was recorded in this fight, due to a deep cut on the head of one of the boxers. Victor won early victories over his next two rivals and went into battle with the first known opponent in his career - Emmanuel Clottey. Victor dominated throughout the fight. In the 10th round, he knocked down Clottey, and then carried out an attack, after which the judge stopped the fight [11] . In the next battle, Ortiz met with the former world champion - Colombian Carlos Maussa . In the middle of the 1st round, Ortiz, having hit Mausset in the jaw, sent him to the knockout. Maussa could not get up in time, and the referee stopped the fight [12] . On May 3, 2008, Ortiz won an early victory over Deiro Isalas. In the 3rd round, Victor and Isalas both knocked down, after which Ortiz sent his opponent two more times to the floor of the ring. In the 5th round, Isalas was knocked down again and could not continue the fight, the judge stopped the fight [13] .

In September 2008, a battle took place between Ortiz and Argentinean Robert David Arietta. At the beginning of the 2nd round, Ortiz inflicted a series of punches in the jaw of his opponent, Arietta sat on the floor, but immediately got up. At the beginning of the 4th round, Victor struck an exact blow to the head, and Arietta, unable to stand on her feet, fell, but again rose immediately. At the end of the 5th round, Ortiz clutched Arietta at the ropes and held two right uppercuts in the jaw, after which the Argentinean knelt down. The referee stopped the fight, Arietta expressed dissatisfaction with the stoppage of the fight. Ortiz won the WBO NABO champion belt [15] . The site of the sports channel ESPN recognized Ortiz the most promising boxer of 2008 [1] .
On March 7, 2009, Ortiz had his first fight, which was aired on HBO . His opponent was the Greek boxer Mike Arnautis [16] . In the 2nd round, Ortiz delivered an exact blow through the opponent’s right hand, Arnautis was shocked and could not resist after Victor’s finishing attack, the judge stopped the fight [17] [18] .
Fight with Maidana
In June 2009, a fight was held for the title of interim world champion in the WBA version between Victor Ortiz and Marcos Rene Maidan . From the first minutes of the fight, both boxers went on a spectacular exchange with blows. Ortiz managed to knock down Maidan in the 1st round, but the Argentinean, in the time remaining before the gong, also managed to send his opponent to the floor of the ring. In the 2nd round of the Maidan, he was knocked down twice more. Despite this, Marcos managed to turn the tide of the battle and at the end of the 5th round he struck Ortiz, after which he opened a deep dissection above his right eye. At the same time, Victor’s left eye was already completely closed due to a hematoma [19] . From the very beginning of the 6th round, the Argentinean began to attack Ortiz and again knocked him down with a blow to the hull. Victor rose, but was upset, after a meeting with the doctor, the judge stopped the fight [20] [21] . Many felt that the boxer gave up and did not want to continue the fight [22] . After the fight, Ortiz said he did not deserve such a beating. This statement was ambiguously greeted by fans of the boxer [7] .
On December 12, 2009, Ortiz returned to the ring after a heavy defeat from Maidana. Victor's rival was Mexican boxer Antonio Diaz . In the 3rd round, Ortiz knocked Diaz down, but he managed to recover, and the fight was continued. Victor carried out an accurate attack in the 6th round, after which Diaz opened a dissection above his left eye. In the interval between rounds, Diaz's team decided not to continue the fight [23] [24] . In the next fight, Ortiz met with former world lightweight champion Nate Campbell . Victor was 0.5 kg heavier than his rival [25] . In the 1st round, Campbell knocked down. Ortiz dominated throughout the fight and won with a unanimous decision [26] [27] . September 18, 2010 in Los Angeles there was a duel between Ortiz and Vivian Hariss . In the 2nd round, Harris twice visited the ring flooring. In the 3rd round he was knocked down again and the judge stopped the fight [28] [29] .
Fight with Peterson
In early October 2010, it became known that Ortiz will conduct his next battle against Lamont Peterson . In this fight it was to be decided who would fight for the champion title in his next fight. On December 11, boxers entered the ring in Las Vegas . The physically stronger Ortiz was the aggressor in this battle, while Peterson relied on speed and tried to keep the enemy at a distance. In the 3rd round, Peterson was knocked down twice, but despite this, the two judges came to the conclusion that a fair result would be a draw. Both boxers considered themselves winners and did not agree with the decision of the judges [30] .
Welterweight category
Fight with Berto
To fight for the WBC world title with Andre Berto , Ortiz decided to go up one step in the weight category. Berto was considered the favorite of the match, he had no defeats in the track record. During the weigh-in, Victor was 0.5 kg heavier than his opponent [31] . Already in the 1st round, Ortiz sent Berto to the flooring of the ring with a left side kick, but the referee regarded it as a push and did not count the knockdown. In the same round, Andre fell again after being hit by an opponent, this time the judge opened the scoring. In the 2nd round, Ortiz has already been knocked down - Berto struck an accurate counter blow to the head. At the beginning of the 3rd round, the boxers exchanged blows, Ortiz was more successful and almost the entire second half of the round, Berto attacked the ropes. In the 6th round, Andre managed to knock down Ortiz with a right-handed shot, but in the follow-up, he missed the exact attack himself and also ended up on the floor of the ring. Victor led on points and brought the fight to victory - the judges unanimously gave the victory to Ortiz. He became the new WBC welterweight world champion [22] [32] . This fight received the title “Fight of the Year” from the magazine “Ring” [2] .
Mayweather Fight
Floyd Mayweather attended Ortiz's bout with Berto, and commentators suggested that the winner of the battle would be his next rival. On May 7, 2010, Mayweather confirmed that Victor would be his next rival [33] . From the 1st round of the fight, Mayweather began to demonstrate superiority in boxing technique over Ortiz. Victor was constantly advancing, but could not hit his opponent. In the 4th round, Floyd delivered several accurate strong blows, Ortiz launched a return attack, but his blows again did not reach the goal. Then Victor clutched Mayweather at the ropes and struck him with a deliberate header, the judge stopped the fight and removed 1 point from Victor. Immediately after the fight was resumed, Ortiz apologized to Mayweather, however, while Victor began to move back with his hands down, Floyd left hook and right direct sent him into a heavy knockout. Ortiz could not get up and the judge stopped the fight [34] . The match referee said in an interview that after the start of the fight, the boxer must constantly protect himself, and that Floyd did nothing contrary to the rules [35] .
After losing to Mayweather, Ortiz announced a rematch with Andre Berto , which was to be held on February 11, 2012, but due to an injury to his left biceps, Berto was postponed to June 23 [36] [37] . On the mandatory doping test before a blood fight, Berto discovered the prohibited anabolic drug Nandrolone , it was removed from the battle [38] . American boxer Josesito Lopez agreed to replace Berto and become an opponent of Ortiz at the upcoming boxing evening [39] . Ortiz was considered a clear favorite, but until the ninth round, a spectacular duel took place in an equal vein. At the end of the round, Lopez carried out an accurate lateral blow to Ortiz's jaw; in the interval between rounds, Victor refused to enter the ring. As it turned out later, Lopez broke his jaw with that side impact. At the time the fight stopped, Ortiz was leading on points in the cards of all three judges [40] .
Style Features
Ortiz is right-handed , however, he is boxing in a right-handed stance (left-handed stance). Victor explains this by saying that despite the fact that he is right-handed and does everything with his right hand, he has a very strong left. Ortiz started training in a right-handed stance and this brought results - he began to miss less and, on the whole, became better, like a boxer. Victor notes that he doesn’t like boxing in the left-handed stance [41] . Ortiz has a knockout punch, 75% of victorious fights in the course of his career, he finished ahead of schedule [42] .
