Biography

Roberto Alfredo Perfumo was born in Sarandi, province of Buenos Aires. He began performing on the Pilgui team, a team from his quarter. In 1960, Perfumo made his debut in the youth team of the River Plate club, in the 5th division of the Argentine championship. In 1961, Perfumo transferred to the Racing club from Avellaneda, first playing as a striker, and then moving to the role of the left central defender. His debut came in a match with Ferrocarril Oeste (a 1-0 victory for Racing), in which he made a huge impression on Nestor Rossi , the Argentine national team coach. At Racing, Perfumo grew into one of Argentina's top central defenders, winning the Argentina Championship, the Libertadores Cup and the Intercontinental Cup in succession. In all these tournaments, Roberto was in the spotlight as the main stronghold of the defense of his club. A major role in the development of Perfumo as a defender was played by Juan Jose Pissuti, who put the player on the defensive.

While at Perfumo's club everything was going well, the team was not so smooth. He made his debut in the main team in 1964, playing in the qualifying tournament for the Olympics in Tokyo. He participated in the 1966 World Cup. In 1969, in the selection for the 1970 World Cup, in a match with Peru, Perfumo was removed. The criticism that hit the football player, and the whole team that didn’t make it to the World Cup, in general, was a burden for the football player in the media, and he moved to Brazil to play for Cruzeiro. At Cruzeiro, Perfumo became a 3-time champion of the state of Mineiro in 3 years. In total for the national team Perfumo held 37 meetings.

In 1974, Perfumo returned to Argentina to play for the River Plate, with whom he won two Metropolitan Championships and one Nacional . He participates in the 1974 World Cup. Roberto Alfredo Perfumo ends his football career in 1978 at the age of 35.

In 1981, Perfumo tried himself as a coach of the club Atletico Sarmiento, 10 years later he led the Racing , and in 1993 he accepted Chemistry and Esgrima , with whom he won the Centenary Cup , dedicated to the centenary of the Argentine Football Association.
