Writing History
Paul wrote it in June 1968 when he was riding his Aston Martin in Weybridge to see Cynthia Lennon and her son. Along the way, he began to think about a change in their lives and about old times when he and John composed songs at his house.
As a family friend, I considered it my duty to go to Weybridge and cheer them up, to say that everything would work out, well, and just to visit. It was about an hour's drive from my house to them. I always turned off the radio and, while driving, tried to compose songs. And somehow I started to sing: “Hey, Jule , don’t worry, take a sad song and make it better ...” These were optimistic, hopeful words of encouragement for Julian: “Yes, my friend, your parents divorced. I understand how you feel, but over time it will become easier for you. ”
In the end, I changed Jules to Judes. One of the Oklahoma characters was called Jude, and I liked that name.
When I finished the song, I sang it to John, although I thought that it still needs to be worked on. There was the line "the movement you need is on your shoulder". I glanced at John and said: "This passage I am going to correct." - “Why?” - “The word shoulders was already in the text. And then, this is a silly expression, and I repeat it like a parrot. I will change him. ” But John said, “Don’t think! This is the best line in the song! I understand what you want to tell her, and that's great. ” That's what I liked John: whenever I wanted to throw out a line, he said that it was the best one. I looked at her through John's eyes. And now, when I perform this song, in this place I always remember John, and I feel sad.

Record Song
The Beatles began work on “Hey Jude” on July 29, 1968. The first session was more like a rehearsal: the band knew that this song would be their next single and devoted all their time to perfecting the arrangement. Paul McCartney sang and played the piano, John Lennon played the acoustic guitar, George Harrison played the electric guitar, Ringo Starr played the drums. They recorded six takes, and everything is noticeably shorter than the final version. One of them can be heard on the Anthology 3 album.
On July 30, The Beatles moved to Trent Studio, where there was suitable recording equipment. The band members took four takes and completed the recording the next day. McCartney added bass and vocals, the rest of the Beatles sang backing vocals. Then an orchestra of 36 instruments played a long code. Classical musicians were offered double pay if they clap their hands and sing “na-na-na-na”. Most were happy to take part, especially for a double fee, but there was one displeased who defiantly left the studio with the words: “I'm not going to clap my hands and sing this stupid McCartney song!” [2]
George Martin :
We recorded “Hey Jude” in the studio “Trident”. It was a long song. Counting the time of its duration, I said: "You can’t record such a long single." But then the guys attacked me, as always, and John asked: “Why?” I could not find a decent answer and said the first thing that came to my mind: “Disc jockeys will not be able to play this disc.”
And John said: “They will, if she is ours.” And he, of course, was absolutely right.
Although “The Beatles”, which had already stopped their concert activities by that time, had never performed “Hey Jude” live, its solemn finale was ideal for public performance, and Paul McCartney later made this song the crown number of his shows.
