History
During construction work in 1852, excavators stumbled upon an ancient burial site (a mound hidden by city buildings) dating back to 1200 BC. e. The main find - the Hove amber vase - is kept in the city museum .
The oldest surviving building in the city is the Hangleton Manor , built around 1540 for Richard Bellingham , Sheriff of Sussex , and the neighboring church of St. Elena . In the 1930s, with the closure of the nearby railway station, the surroundings of the two monuments were surrounded by dense housing.
During the time of George IV , with the growing popularity of Brighton seaside, construction of seaside neighborhoods in the style of regency began near the coast of Hove. Under Queen Victoria, the development of wide streets and boulevards, carried out according to a regular plan, shifted west and inland. The resident population grew from 100 inhabitants in 1801 to 2,500 in 1841 and 11,000 in 1871. [1] Hove, like Brighton, attracted English and European celebrities and rich people (see the English list of famous residents of Brighton and Hove ). Modern Anglican churches of St. Barnabas, All Saints, St. Andrew - are also built at Victoria.
The Hove City Museum was opened in 1927 in a Victorian villa built in the 1870s (during World War I German prisoners of war were kept in the house). [2] The museum’s house is decorated with the “Jaipur Gate” , forged in England for the colonial exhibition of 1886 .
