Club career
Makari played for the English club Manchester United from 1973 to 1984. It was bought from Celtic for 200 thousand pounds. Makari's debut game for United was a meeting against West Ham United , in which he scored an important goal, snatching a 2-2 draw in this match. In 1977, his hit, bounced from teammate Jimmy Greenhoff , was victorious in the FA Cup Final against Liverpool . In total for United, Lu Makari played 404 matches and scored 97 goals. He was also called up to the Scottish national team and played at the 1978 World Cup .
At the beginning of his career at Old Trafford , he tried to lead an attack that in those days did not shine. The club’s relegation to the Second Division in 1974 was a painful blow, but in the following seasons Makari showed all his skills, already under the leadership of the new United coach Tommy Doherty . The club began to play attractive attacking football, and Makari showed himself excellently in interaction with such players as Gordon Hill , Steve Koppell and the Greenhoff brothers.
