History

During the possession of Aruba by the Netherlands for a long time, the island was inhabited only by Indians who looked after cattle and chopped trees for sale. They could live relatively freely, as the Dutch West Indies Company (VIC) prohibited the construction of settlements for non-Indian populations. An exception was made for VIC soldiers and their servants, who had a small settlement in Savanet [2] since 1816 , when the Netherlands regained control of the island (the settlement became known as Savaneta in 1840 ). From here, the island was ruled by the commander of Aruba.

Until the 1850s, besides fishing, the main business was the cultivation of cochineals - small insects living in cacti that are used to make carmine paint.
