Biography
His mother died when Jules was 4 years old, and his father raised him. In 1842, he met the artist Felix de Vigne, who, impressed by his youthful talent, convinced his family to let him do art. Breton traveled to Ghent in 1843, where he continued to study art at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1846, Breton moved to Antwerp , where he took lessons from Egidius Karel Gustav Wappers and for some time copied the works of Flemish masters. In 1847 he went to Paris , where he studied at the School of Fine Arts. The subjects of Breton's paintings are borrowed from folk life. Most of his paintings are idyllic; they depict the lives of shepherds or peasants in the field; execution, in general, is distinguished by realism, but the concept itself is not foreign to some idealistic coloring.
