Story
The plot of the film is based on the mythical love relationship of Ivan Mazepa , when he was a prisoner at the court of the Polish king Jan Casimir. Their occurrence is associated with the conflict that occurred between Mazepa and the nobleman Jan Pasek. Passek in 1661 maintained secret relations with the opposition Confederates. As a faithful servant, Mazepa was forced to report this to his overlord. As a result, Y. Pasek was arrested, but he managed to convince the judges of his innocence.
As revenge, Passek invented and disseminated information about Mazepa’s romance with the wife of the gentry Stanislav Falbovsky. As a result, this story supposedly ends with the scene of the reprisal of the husband over his wife’s lover:
“... Having stripped him naked, they put him face to the tail, and with his feet to the horse’s head on his own horse, having removed the saddle from him in advance. His hands were tied behind his back, and his legs were tied under the belly of a horse. They shouted at the horse by nature, shouted, hit with lashes, ripping off his cap from his head, and shot him several times. The frightened horse rushed home like mad. And it was necessary to go through dense thickets, hawthorn, hazel, pear, blackthorn, not by a simple way, but by paths ... And it was necessary to bend down the road often, holding the reins in their hands, to go around dangerous places. It happened that a branch would hit on the head and tear apart clothes. So, you can imagine how the naked horseman was wounded, given that the fast and terrified horse flew blindly from fear and pain, where his legs carried him while flying through the forest ... When he got home all wounded, Mazepa started shouting “Sentinels!” ... They did not believe, but at last they let him in, exhausted and frozen, he could hardly talk ” [1] .
