The station was opened 12 years after the closure in 1938 of the first Soviet drifting station North Pole-1 . The station was opened on an ice floe measuring 3000 × 2400 m, which at the opening was at 76 ° 02 'N and 166 ° 30 'east As during the first station, the expedition members lived in tents. During the operation of the station, 58 people visited the ice floe, aircraft landed 71 times, 96 tons of cargo were delivered. After breaking the ice on which the station was originally located, the camp was moved to another ice floe.
