North Pole 21

North Pole-21 (SP-21) - Soviet research drift station . Opened May 1, 1972 .

General information
opening dateMay 1, 1972
closing dateMay 25, 1974
Expedition members
SupervisorG.I. Kizino
N.V. Makurin

The station worked two shifts - from 1972 to 1973 and from 1973 to 1974.

The feature of the drifting station SP-21 was that, unlike most stations that were located on long-term ice pack islands, the SP-21 started to drift on a regular, relatively fragile ice floe: there was no pack in the right area. Therefore, the head of the SP-21 station was appointed an experienced specialist - G.I. Kizino, for whom it was the seventh wintering. [one]

First shift (1972-1973)

The first shift worked from May 1, 1972 to April 26, 1973. The duration of the drift was 360 days.

Beginning of drift at 74 ° 42 'N and 175 ° 58 'E, ending at 79 ° 58' N and 156 ° 57 'East The total drift amounted to 1600 km, occurred at a speed of 4.44 km / day. When the station was opened, the size of the ice floe was 4000x4000 m at the end of the shift - 3800x3600 m, the ice thickness was 490 cm.

During the first shift, 393 tons of cargo were delivered. In total, 108 people visited the ice floe.

Also, 190 aircraft ( An-24 , Il-14 , Li-2 , An-2 ) were taken at the station for the first shift. In the spring of 1973, a mobile unit of the air high-latitude expedition "North" was based on the ice, for which fuel and lubricants were brought. For the same purpose, a remote base operated at a distance of 300 km east of the station until May 9, 1973.

Second shift (1973-1974)

The second shift worked from April 26, 1973 to May 25, 1974. The duration of the drift was 381 days.

Beginning of drift at 79 ° 58 'N and 156 ° 57 'E, ending at 86 ° 16' N and 143 ° 36 'East The total drift amounted to 2519 km, occurred at a speed of 6.61 km / day. At the end of the shift, the size of the ice floe was 3600x2500 m, the ice thickness was 490 cm.

The head of the station was Makurin N.V.

The shift was attended by:

  18. Maykhrovsky Group E.N.

In the course of the work of the second shift of the SP-21, in particular, a prototype of equipment for measuring the thickness of ice from an airplane was tested, instrumental observations of the relative movements of ice were carried out, full-scale tests of the new automatic drifting radio meteorological station AGMS-L were started. During the second shift, 108 tons of cargo were delivered. A total of 104 people visited the ice floe.

Accepted 90 aircraft ( IL-14 , Li-2 ).

Facts

  • SP-21 was used as the starting base for the North-25 expedition , which performed deep-sea oceanological and meteorological observations at 182 points of the Arctic Ocean . [one]
  • In 1973, at the drifting station SP-21, the first analysis of water samples for the content of oil and oil products was carried out. [2]
  • The SP-21 stationery company envelopes with a two-color pattern were prepared for the second shift landing: against the background of the northern lights, the pennant of a drifting station with the contours of the Arctic basin and a symbolic broken line of drift is depicted. [3]
