History
Main building to the founding of the Institute of Foreign Languages (until 1930)
The modern main building of the Moscow State Linguistic University, built in 1764-1772 according to the project of architect Matvey Kazakov , was originally a mansion of the Moscow governor Pyotr Eropkin , who lived here until 1805. Under the governor, balls were often held here, and Alexander Pushkin and his parents visited in childhood. After the death of the owners, the house was inherited by the Eropkin family - Novosiltsov , and then passed into the possession of the princes Gagarin [3] . Shortly before the death of Eropkin , in 1804, by the highest decree of Emperor Alexander I , the Moscow Imperial Commercial School was established with the teaching of English, French, German and Latin. In 1806, a decision was made to purchase the house of P. D. Eropkin on Ostozhenka (house No. 38) for the school for 35 thousand rubles [3] . Teaching in the new school building began in 1808. Here at different times Efrem Baryshev , Nikolay Vavilov , Sergey Vavilov , Vladimir Rodionov , Ivan Goncharov , Sergey Solovyov and other prominent figures of art and science studied [4] . As a result of the civil war of the beginning of the XX century, the Moscow Commercial School ceased its activities. After the revolution, before the entrance of the 1st Moscow State Pedagogical Institute, the Prechistensky work courses , the Faculty of Work named after Bukharin, Prechistensk Practical Institute, two schools [5] .

Criticism
In January 2011, the Khamovniki inter-district prosecutor’s office began checking the MSLU on the application of a previously expelled student who refused to take the “paid repeat of the year” offered to him by the administration of the MSLU as an alternative to expulsion. During the audit, “a number of violations of federal law were discovered at the university: the rules for admission of applicants, the procedure for the restoration of students expelled for no good reason, and the implementation of paid activities” were established [31] . Subsequently, by decision of the Khamovnichesky District Court of Moscow, the student was reinstated at Moscow State Linguistic University, and the order for his expulsion was declared unlawful and unreasonable [32] . The rights of students to learn, in addition to studies, any other disciplines taught at the university, the right to switch from paid to free education, the order of moral and material encouragement of students for academic success and active participation in research work have not been established. Based on the results of the inspection, the prosecutor’s office submitted to the rector of the Moscow State Linguistic University an opinion on eliminating violations of the law [33] .
