History
Soon after the founding of the first English settlement in America, Jamestown , in 1607, the colonists began to study and develop the land adjacent to the complex of bays and harbors, known as the Hampton Roads . On July 9, 1610, English colonists captured the Indian village of Kekutan, located near the mouth of the Hampton Creek, and founded their own settlement with the Anglican Church, which became the oldest of the continuously existing English settlements in America. In 1619, the Virginia colony was divided into four "cities", and these places became part of Elizabeth City (Elizabeth Cittie). After the bankruptcy of the London company, Virginia became a crown colony, and was divided into eight "counties"; in 1634 these places became part of the county of Warwick River Shire (Warwick River Shire), in 1643 it was renamed Warwick County. It was an agricultural region that allocated land for farms and plantations; in 1704, 125 private estates were registered here. Since 1810, district authorities have been in the possession of Denbigh.
In 1837, the 16-year-old Collis Hattington visited the village of Newport News Point, who later became a major railway tycoon. When, after the American Civil War , the era of Reconstruction began, then in the 1870s, Williams Wickham involved Hattington in the construction of railways in Virginia. The railways allowed the development of coal deposits in West Virginia , but a deepwater port was required for coal export; The York River in the Richmond area was too shallow for coal transports. Hattington decided that the southeastern portion of Warwick County was the best place to reload coal from rail to maritime transport, and in 1881 began moving along the railway line to Newport News; The coastal farming region has become a fast-growing port.
Building a railroad to these places was the first part of Huntington’s plans to develop Virginia. In 1886, the op built the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company to repair ships arriving at the coal terminal. In 1891, the shipyard built its first ship, the tugboat Dorothy. By 1897, Newport News had built three large ships for the US Navy: gunboats Nashville, Wilmington, and Helena.
For a short time, Warwick County authorities moved to Newport News from Denbai, where they had been stationed since colonial times. However, Newport News grew so fast that already in 1896, by decision of the General Assembly of Virginia, Newport News became an independent city (one of two in the state), bypassing the traditional intermediate stage of the “incorporated city”. Since shipbuilding became the basis of the city’s economy, the concepts “mayor of Newport News” and “head of the shipyard” became, in fact, interchangeable, and the city developed in accordance with the logic of development and maintenance of the shipyard.
In 1952, Warwick County was transformed into the independent city of Warwick. In 1958, residents of Warwick and Newport News voted in a referendum to merge the two cities into one, for which the name "Newport News" was taken.
