Gymnasium No. 1 (formerly “First School named after Engels”, now “Municipal General Education Institution Gymnasium No. 1 of Chelyabinsk”) is the oldest educational institution in Chelyabinsk , founded in 1861 .

The main emphasis in training is on foreign languages, English has been studied since grade 1, from 5 students choose a second language (usually French or German), and lessons in English literature appear in grade 10.
On the territory of the gymnasium there is an object of cultural heritage of the peoples of Russia of regional significance - a monument to those who died in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, graduates of secondary school No. 1 named after F. Engels. The monument is protected by the state.

History
In 1861, the Chelyabinsk Women's School of the 2nd category was opened, the first graduation of which took place in 1864. In 1871, the school was transformed into a gymnasium, which had four classes and was located in its own building on Zwilling Street . Over the next thirty years, the number of students increased, additional classes opened. In 1905, the gymnasium was transformed into a gymnasium , in which there were already 8 classes. In 1913, a new gymnasium building was built. The number of students by the end of 1914 was 638.
In 1920, a second-level school was created on the basis of the ZHG and the male real school. By 1935, it had become a ten-year high school and received the name of Friedrich Engels .
In 1962, Vladimir Abramovich Karakovsky became the director of the school. At the same time, the school was transformed into a specialized school; teaching of some subjects in English was introduced.

Most of the traditions of the First School were laid under V. A. Karakovsky. These include the Day of Remembrance of the Fallen Alumni, the Day of Creativity, the Communal gathering.

- Medvedev, Valery Vladimirovich (1923-1997) - Soviet and Russian children's writer, author of a cycle of novels about Yuri Barankin: “Barankin, be a man!” (1961; cartoon by Alexandra Snezhko-Blotskaya , 1963; operetta Serafim Tulikova , 1965; film strip by Mark Dreitsun , 1980; diploma of the Kh.K. The prototypes of most of the heroes of the cycle were the writer's classmates - students of the Chelyabinsk school number 1 [2] .
- Alevtina Fedorovna Brovkina (Dadonova) (born 1930) - Soviet and Russian ophthalmologist , creator of the Russian Oncophthalmological School, doctor of medical sciences (1970), USSR State Prize laureate (1984), Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation (1990), laureate Prizes of the Government of the Russian Federation (2002), academician of RAMS (2004), academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2013), professor of the Department of Ophthalmology with a course in pediatric ophthalmology and orbital pathology of the Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education .
