Life and work

He began teaching painting in 1702 at the art workshop of Andreas Wolf in Munich , where he studied the Italian style of drawing. In 1713 he returned to Augsburg , where he worked at the Academy, and in 1730 became its director .

During the years of Bergmüller's leadership of the Academy, Augsburg in Germany turns, like Vienna in Austria , into a center for the development of Baroque and Rococo painting. The artist begins to paint frescoes, the earliest of which can be seen in the Kurfürst Hospital Church of Düsseldorf ( 1709 ). The next step in the development of his skill is the frescoes in the church of the Abbey of Ochsenhausen ( 1727 - 1729 ). However, the artist rightly considered the work of his life 1736 frescoes in the Augustinian monastery in Dyssen (Ammersee). His style is academic, classic, especially reflected in cold and bright colors . He also worked on altar art (The Savior's Decision 1748, St. Ursula’s Church, Landsberg (Lech).) Many of Bergmüller’s works were reproduced in graphic series made from copper engravings, such as scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary from the Polheim chapel in Augsburg.

Bergmüller was also engaged in pedagogy and the theory of art, as evidenced by his work “ On the Geometric Relations of Building Columns from a Doric Style Square ” published in 1753, with 22 of his engravings as illustrations .
