Theodoros (Teo) Angelopoulos ( Greek Θόδωρος Αγγελόπουλος ; April 27, 1935 , Athens - January 24, 2012 [1] ) - Greek film director , laureate of many world film festivals . He was named among the best directors of world cinema [2] [3] .

Biography
In Greece, Angelopoulos studied law . Then, after completing military service, he went to Paris and entered the Sorbonne , but soon left it for the Institute of Higher Cinematographic Education (IDHEC). In 1964 he returned to Greece, worked as a journalist and film critic in the left-wing journal Democratic Choice .
The first short film was created in 1968 during the regime of " black colonels ", whose opponent he was. In the 1970s, he directed a series of several films dedicated to the history of Greece in the 20th century : “ Days of 1936 ” (1972), “ Comedians ” (1975) and “ Hunters ” (1977). He is known for his style, which is characterized by a slow narrative and long shots (for example, in the movie "Comedians" for 230 minutes of screen time, only 80 frames fall).
Films of Angelopoulos were selected six times in the main program of the Cannes Film Festival and at four of them were awarded, including the main prize of the festival - “ Golden Palm Branch ” (1998, for the film “ Eternity and One Day ”). In addition, Angelopoulos was awarded the main prize five times for the best Greek film festival in Thessaloniki .
In 1991, he was excommunicated from the Greek Orthodox Church by Metropolitan Augustine Florinsky for the film “ Interrupted Stork Step ”. [four]
Often worked with cameraman Jorgos Arvanitis , composer Eleni Karaindru and screenwriter Tonino Guerra .
In 2000, Angelopoulos led the jury of the XXII Moscow International Film Festival .
On January 24, 2012, Theodoros Angelopoulos was hit by a motorcycle on the set of the new film, The Other Sea , which took place on a highway in the southern suburbs of Athens. After the collision, the director fell into a four-meter concrete well. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where doctors tried to help him in the intensive care unit, but the director died [5] .
