It was founded at the end of the 17th century by the Yelets scribe S. Kropotov. Hence the name. In addition, there was another name - Lyubashevka (along the Lyubashevka river).
In 1791, the village was bought by Pyotr Yurievich Lermontov, the grandfather of the poet M. Yu. Lermontov . Since 1817, the father of the poet Yuri Petrovich lived in Kropotov. M. Yu. Lermontov himself was here in 1827 .
In the 1880s the estate was acquired by academician P. L. Chebyshev and presented it to his elder sister Elizaveta Lvovna Tarasenkova (October 29, 1819–1888), the widow of a famous Moscow doctor , the head of the Sheremetev hospital and the doctor who treated N. V. Gogol [2] .
