Thiruvalluvar (transliterated. Thiruvalluvar , there. திருவள்ளுவர் ) - Tamil poet, author of the book " Tirukural ", which the Tamils revered as sacred. He lived in the vicinity of Mailapur (south of Chennai ).
The biography of Thiruvalluvar is so controversial that it is impossible to even determine exactly which faith and caste he belonged to (issues of principle for India ). It is widely believed that he was a Hindu - Pariah , Jain , a Hindu from a low caste, a Buddhist , a Hindu from a high caste, a Brahmin or a descendant of an inter-caste marriage. [one]
Both Tamils , supporters of both Hinduism , and Tamils , Jains, consider him “their own." [2] A number of textual issues in Tirukkural show at least the closeness of the author’s views to Jainism. [3] A number of scholars, in particular J. Pope, who spent many years in Tamil Nadu and translated many texts from the Tamil language - including the Tirukkural himself, believed that this book was written under the explicit influence of Buddhism .
The life time is also unknown - according to various hypotheses based on the textual analysis of “Tirukkural”, he could live from the 2nd century. BC e. up to 8 in. n e. [four]
The name Thiruvalluvar consists of Thiru (a polite Tamil word meaning roughly “lord”) [5] and Valluvar (a polite form of the name Valluvan ).
