Tertiary Oil Production Method

The tertiary oil production method ( EOR, Enhanced oil recovery ; Oil recovery methods, Oil recovery methods; the outdated term Tertiary oil recovery [1] ) is one of the oil production methods that increases the productivity of oil wells . It is carried out while artificially maintaining formation energy or artificially changing the physicochemical properties of oil.

Such production leads to an intensification of oil inflow and an increase in oil recovery ( oil recovery ratio) of the field to 30–60%, compared with 20–40% achieved as a result of using primary or secondary production methods. [2] [3]

Primary methods use only the natural energy of the formation; they achieve a recovery factor of not more than 20-30%. Secondary methods are associated with maintaining in-situ energy by injecting water and natural gas into the reservoir. They reach typical recovery factors of not more than 30–50%. [1] [4]

Enhanced oil recovery in tertiary methods is achieved by injecting gas , injecting chemicals , using the thermal method to increase oil recovery by cyclically injecting steam into the oil reservoir or creating in-situ combustion.

Classification of enhanced oil recovery methods

According to the type of working agents, the classification of known methods of enhanced oil recovery is as follows:

  1. Thermal methods ( OGV and others);
  2. Gas methods (e.g. CO 2 -EOR);
  3. Physical methods ( IRP and others);
  4. Chemical methods ( ECV , microbiological effects and others);
  5. Hydrodynamic methods ;
  6. Flow diverting methods ;
  7. Combined methods
    1. Physicochemical methods ( Reagent-activation effect and others)

The most widely used (over 100 implementations) are thermal and gas (CO 2 ) methods. [5] According to the US Department of Energy, among the tertiary methods used in the USA, thermal methods account for 40% and 60% for gas. About one percent of applications were in chemical technologies (polymers, surfactants) [2] .

In the first decade of the 21st century, around 3 million barrels per day (of which 2 million were produced using thermal methods) were produced in the world due to tertiary methods (according to Aramco estimates), which accounted for about 3.5% of global oil production. [five]
