History

The first seaplane landed on Aruba on July 24, 1925 in Paardenbay Bay in Oranjestad. In 1933, the governor of Aruba for the first time announced plans to build an airport on the island, under which Dakota territory was allocated on the southern coast of Aruba. On December 23, 1934, the first three-engined aircraft landed in Savaneti [1] .

The first scheduled flight was opened on January 19, 1935 and connected Aruba and Curaçao ; in 1935, 2,659 passengers were served by this flight. Until 1940, air links were established between the island and Barbados , Trinidad , Maracaibo , Paramaribo , Miami , Venezuela and Lisbon [1] .

During the Second World War , the United States Air Force organized a base on the island. In 1950, the second terminal was opened, in 1952, fire engines began to be permanently located at the airport [1] .

On October 22, 1955, Dakota Airport was renamed in honor of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. The opening ceremony was attended by Prince Bernard [1] .

In 2000, a three-year project to expand the airport was launched, called “Beatrix 2000” [1] .
