Ouyang Xun ( Chinese trad. 歐陽詢 , ex. 欧阳询 , pinyin : Ōuyáng Xún , honorary name Xinben信 本, 557 , Changsha , Hunan - 641 , Anhui ) is a Confucian scholar and calligrapher of the early Tang Dynasty era in China , one of the most significant calligraphers of China and the region. Classic kaishu style.

Biography

Ouyang Xun came from a family of administrators and scholars from the southern Chen Dynasty. At an early age, he lost his father (who fell in battle) and himself barely escaped death during an attack by the Sui troops. He was received and trained by one of his father's old friends. Ouyang Xun studied the chronicles of Shi-ji , Hanshu and Dongguan Hanzi especially well.

In 611, he received a post under the Sui Dynasty. Even before Li Yuan proclaimed a new dynasty, his family accepted Ouyang Xun with respect. When Li Yuan proclaimed himself emperor of the new Tang Dynasty, he immediately granted Ouyang Xun significant posts and powers.

During the early Tang Dynasty, Ouyang Xun was a censor and scholar at the Hongwen Academy . Here he taught calligraphy and created a set of 36 rules for writing hieroglyphs, as well as a calligraphy training system, which later became generally accepted.

Ouyang Xun was the compiler, as well as, along with Linghu Dafeng and Chen Shuda , the main author of the encyclopedia Yven Leiju (completed in 624 ).

As the state calligrapher Tang, Ouyang Xun left inscriptions on several of the most important stelae of the empire. Each of his preserved calligraphic works is important for understanding the development of calligraphy in China, Japan and other countries.

Both with his works on the theory and practice of calligraphy, and with samples of calligraphy, Ouyang Xun influenced the whole subsequent manner of writing Chinese characters.

His poetic works are also preserved.
