APU-10

VSU-10 (product "21") - Auxiliary power plant based on a gas turbine engine with a free turbine rotating the drive compressor and alternator through a gearbox-multiplier. It is used on domestic aircraft of various modifications IL-86 and IL-96 developed by Ilyushin Design Bureau . VGTD VSU-10 was developed at the Omsk Motor Engineering Design Bureau .

APU-10 is used as an autonomous energy center on the ground with idle aircraft engines and in emergency situations in flight. The launch of the APU is possible when the aircraft is parked at aerodromes with a relative height of up to 1000 meters, the launch in flight up to a height of 4000 meters, the operation of the APU in flight is possible up to a height of 5000 meters. Continuous operation time - up to 15 hours. APU provides:

  • power supply of main onboard consumers with alternating current 208 volts 400 Hz.
  • air supply to the air conditioning system with a flow rate of up to 3.5 kg / s
  • air supply to turbopump plants
  • air supply to the system of air start of marching engines.

On aircraft, the IL-86/96 APU is installed in the rear of the aircraft in a heated compartment (from hard currency).

History

The VSU-10 engine (product "21") was developed at the Omsk Machine-Building Design Bureau (KB-8). It was created on the basis of the gas generator of the turboprop engine TVD-10 B. State tests passed in 1979.

Design

APU-10 constructively consists of:

  • GTD-21 gas turbine engine
  • gearbox-multiplier RM-21
  • drive compressor PK-21
  • GT40PCh6 alternating current generator ser.2
  • air bypass mechanism behind the drive compressor

APU work

The APU is located in the aft of the liner in its own compartment, which is an independent removable structure. The shutter of the input channel of the APU at the time of operation is opened by the MP-750TV electric drive mechanism.

The launch of the APU is possible in one of two modes: normal or emergency. In normal mode, the APU for a period of not more than 30 seconds. goes into idle mode, and after warming up it is displayed at operating speed, after which it is possible to turn on the generator and take off air. During an emergency start, the engine directly enters the nominal mode, bypassing the idle mode, and all protective systems are turned off.

Promotion of the APU when launched by two electric starters ST-107B from a direct current electric power source: ground-based installation or on-board batteries.

The launch program is implemented by the APD-10 automatic panel, the fuel ignition system consists of the SKN-22-1 radioisotope unit and two igniters with two SP-24VA semiconductor candles.

The time for the engine to reach MG mode is not more than 30 seconds, the temperature drop of the exhaust gases is not more than 620 ° C. Warming up the APU in the MG mode for at least 3 minutes, after which you can switch the operating mode to the nominal speed and turn on the load.

Stop the APU: remove the load, put the engine in the MG mode for cooling for at least 3 minutes, turn off the PIC of the APU, stop the engine with the operating mode selector switch. After stopping the APU, wait at least 30 seconds for cooling, then turn off the main switch, and the inlet flap will close.

Interesting Facts

  • Shortly after the start of serial production of the APU-10, problems were discovered that led to the failure of the engine. These problems were associated both with design flaws and with the presence of large deviations of the manufactured parts from the requirements of the technical specifications of the drawing. This led to the early withdrawal of the APU-10 from airplanes. Due to the frequent absence of spare AFU-10s at the VASO aircraft plant or airports, IL-86 aircraft were not equipped with VGTD and were idle. Non-operational work of the plant. Baranova on deliveries of AFU-10 and OMKB for untimely elimination of defects caused great discontent of operating organizations and MAP. At one of the IAP meetings in April 1985, the minister proposed to draw organizational conclusions. As a result, V. S. Pashchenko resigned from the post of chief designer of OMKB. Kostogryz V. G. replaced him.
