Castello (Venice)

District on the city map.

Castello ( Italian. Castello ) - the largest of the six historic districts of Venice . It occupies the eastern part of the city.

The name of the area comes from the military settlement of Roman legionnaires - Castrum . In the Middle Ages, in its place was built the church of San Pietro di Castello .

Arsenal , which at one time was a shipyard for the construction of the famous Venetian galleys , divides this area into two parts. The eastern part is covered with gardens, in the west there are many monuments of architecture and art (the monastery of St. Zechariah , the great basilica of Zanipolo , the Greek church , the Dalmatian scuola with frescoes by Carpaccio , etc.). Along the lagoon passes the Slavic Promenade, or Riva degli Schiavone .

After Napoleon closed the shipyard shipyard, the eastern end of Castello was planted with gardens. Now it is the gardens of the Biennale with pavilions of the countries participating in the world art show .

In the 1920s. the previously isolated island of Saint Helena was expanded and connected to Castello by three bridges. At the same time, Pierluigi Penzo Stadium was built there for the Venice Football Club.
