Biography
Alexey Antonovich's parents lived in Kholmogory in exile. His mother died immediately after the birth of her son. The increase in the Braunschweig family did not arouse joy among Empress Elizabeth Petrovna , since, according to the will of Anna Ivanovna, these princes and princesses had more rights to the throne than the empress herself and her nephew Peter Fedorovich , declared heir. Having received a report on the birth of Alexei, Elizabeth "deigned, having read, this report to tear apart" [2] . She also sought to hide the number of children of the princess. Major Guryev, guarding the ducal family, received instructions:
| tell the prince to write only what illness he has died with and not mention the prince's birth [2] |
And he himself was forbidden to talk "about the number of children of princesses and what sex [2] ".
Until the age of 28, Alexey Antonovich lived in Kholmogory with his father (who died in 1774 ), his brother Peter and his sisters. They were under tough house arrest, they were not allowed to go outside the yard, their social circle was limited.
In 1780, they were visited by Senator A. P. Melgunov . He described Alexey as follows:
| The younger brother Alexey is 34 years old. ... the growth of a small, blond and face similar to his father. ... The youngest brother in the whole body of health and character is not sullen; |
At the beginning of 1780, Catherine II decided to send the children of Anton Ulrich to the aunt of Julian Maria . On June 30, all of them on the frigate βPolar Starβ, having received silver dishes, jewelry and gifts, were taken to Denmark , where they were assigned money from the Russian treasury (8 thousand rubles a year for each).
In Denmark, Alexey Antonovich lived in Gorsens , where he died at the age of forty-one. He was buried in the local church, but according to the Orthodox rite .
