| Al Giardello resigns as head of the murder department. He runs for mayor of Baltimore. During Al's speech at an outdoor conference, someone shoots him several times and injures him. Al is hospitalized in serious condition. Garty, who became the head of the murder department, raises the entire department for investigation. Lewis, Falzon, Ballard, Shepard and Styvers begin working out suspects. Michael Giardello, who became a police officer, goes to the hospital to his father. Munch, who has long been working in New York, arrives in Baltimore, where he meets Bolander, who has long been retired. They both come to the department to help former colleagues. Baileys returns from rest, and Pambleton, who is now engaged in teaching, also comes.
