The parade on Red Square on May 9, 1996, was held on Victory Day , the 51st anniversary of the end of World War II . Starting this year, military parades in the capital of the Russian Federation began to take place on Red Square (parades in Moscow were not held in 1991-1994; in 1995, on May 9, only a parade of veterans took place on Red Square, and a parade of troops and military equipment took place on Poklonnaya Hill ) [1] .
The parade began at exactly 9 am after the chiming clock . The Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation , President of the Russian Federation Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin addressed the front-line soldiers, the last time using the mausoleum as a tribune [2] . Unlike the parade of veterans on May 9, 1995, the word "LENIN" on the mausoleum during the parade on May 9, 1996 was not hung with decorations [3] [4] . Like last year, a banner with the Order “Victory” was hung on the building of GUM. Historical Museum decorated the composition in the form of the number "1996" with St. George ribbon . Opposite the Mausoleum there was a picture of S. N. Prisekin depicting Marshal G. K. Zhukov on horseback, trampling German banners [5] .
Commander of the Moscow Military District commander, Colonel-General Leonty Kuznetsov, commanded the parade. The parade was received by the Minister of Defense of Russia, General of the Army Pavel Sergeevich Grachev .
At this parade, the Victory Banner (copy) was first presented as a state symbol, carried at the head of the parade along with the flag of Russia [6] . For the first time, the Victory Banner was carried not by veterans of the Great Patriotic War, but by active military personnel [5] .
7,370 troops participated in the parade. The walking part of the parade lasted about 20 minutes [5] . Heavy military equipment was not represented at the parade [7]
