Biography

Born in a family of Jewish immigrants Max Malamud and Berta Fidelman from the city of Kamenetz-Podolsky ( Khmelnitsky region ). He graduated from the Erasmus School in Brooklyn and Columbia University . In the 1940s he taught at evening school, in 1949 he took a position at the University of Oregon , in 1961 he became a teacher at Bennington College ( Vermont ), where he worked for more than 20 years. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (American Academy of Arts and Sciences), president of the American PEN Club ( 1979 - 1981 ).

Literary work

Malamud’s first novel was The Born Master ( 1952 ). The book about the fate of a baseball player ruined by corruption prevailing in American sports immediately made the author famous. In his subsequent novel The Helper ( 1957 ) and collections of short stories The Magic Keg ( 1958 ) and First Idiots ( 1963 ), Malamud vividly depicted the life of the Jewish poor of New York. The heroes of Malamud are “ordinary people fighting to improve their lives in a world of evil fate.” The novel “Masterova” ( 1967 ) gained great fame - according to the authors of the EEE , one of the most significant works of modern American literature . The novel was written based on the case of M. Beilis . The last major work of Malamud was the fantastic apocalyptic novel “Grace of the Lord God” ( 1983 ). Creativity of Malamud is characterized by allegories, allegory , grotesque .
