Labin Republic ( Croatian. Labinska republika , Italian. Repubblica di Albona ) is a mining ministry established in the Croatian city of Labin on the Istrian peninsula, which at that time was part of Italy . It existed from March 2 to April 8, 1921 .
History
In 1921 , the Italian fascists attacked and set fire to the Work House in Trieste , in which there were representatives of the miners' union from Rashi ( Hor. Raša , Italian. Arsia ) - a town 4.5 km south-west of Labin . This action caused a wave of indignation among two thousand Labin miners, they occupied the mines and declared a general strike . The miners' committee decided to organize detachments of “red sentinels” to protect themselves from the Nazis. On March 2, he decided to proclaim Labin a republic and establish independent coal mining and other industries, which was also supported by local peasants. The mine administration put forward economic demands; unsuccessful negotiations with the authorities took place. On March 21, work was resumed at the mine. At the same time, the administration of the colony detained 13 Sicilian miners loyal to the Nazis.
The Italian authorities decided to crush the self-proclaimed republic by force, and on April 8, troops were sent into the city, scattering the resistance of the miners (2 miners were killed).
In the city of Pula, from November 16 to December 3, 1921, a trial took place. 52 miners were accused of occupying the mine, resisting the authorities, establishing the Soviet regime, etc. However, lawyers successfully defended the accused, and the jury acquitted them.
